Summer Sun Design T-shirt Craft

This is a simplified batik technique that can be used to create a summery pattern on a T-shirt

Materials:

  • white T-shirt or tank top
  • flour
  • water
  • cardboard
  • squeeze bottle
  • red, yellow, or orange fabric paint
  • spray bottles

Directions:

  1. Cut cardboard to fit inside the T-shirt so it doesn't bleed through to the back.
  2. Mix flour and some water until it's the thick and has the consistency of mustard. Do this right before you are going to use it, so it doesn't get too hard and gluey. Pour into a squeeze bottle.
  3. Squeeze on a sun design maybe with a swirl in the middle onto the T-shirt. Let bake in the hot sun for a couple of hours to let harden.
  4. Spray the shirt with red, yellow, or orange fabric paint(Tulip is one brand) and let dry in the sun.
  5. Remove the cardboard and peel off the flour paste to reveal the design.
  6. Wash according to paint manufacturer's directions.

Variations:

Don't forget to paint the back side or make another design on the back.
You could experiment, start with a yellow T-shirt or other color.
Use the same concept for other designs, For a sea theme, draw a fish and waves and paint with blue and green paint. For a night sky theme, draw a moon and stars and paint with dark blue and purple. Let your imagination go.
