Princess Party Hat Craft

Here's a funny hat craft my daughter came home with from her Japanese elementary school. It was funny, everyone at home had  different opinion of what kind of hat it was. My dauhter said it was a birthday hat, I thought it was a princess hat, my younger daughter said it was a witch hat, and my wife said it was a clown's circus hat. All of the above are good answers. Whatever hat it is, you're kids will have a ball making and wearing it.

Materials:

  • large sheet of pink sketching paper
  • colorful paper and fabric scraps
  • scissors
  • glue
  • tape
  • colorful string or paper twine

Directions:

  1. Roll the pink paper into a large cone and tape together.
  2. Cut a "V" in the front so it fits better.
  3. Cut and glue on paper and fabric scraps to decorate. At the top, she folded a scrap piece of origami paper into a jewel.
  4. Tape a length of string on either side for a strap.
  5. Wear at the play, your next costume party, or anytime.

Father's Day King Crown Craft

Here's a great-looking Father's Day Crown Craft. Dad can be King for a Day, at least.

Materials:
  •  yellow construction paper
  • cup about 3 inches wide
  • quarter
  • pencil
  • markers
  • rhinestones, craft jewels, cellophane, or glitter
  • tape
  • scissors
  • glue

Directions:

  1. Tape 2 sheets of yellow construction paper together at the ends to make one long rectangle.
  2. Start at one end, trace the cup, slightly off the edge of the paper to create the curved shape on top of the crown. Continue down the length, leaving about 3/4 of an inch between each circle.
  3. Trace a quarter at the closest point between each circle to make the pinnacles.
  4. Cut out the lines to make your crown. If the crown is too tall, cut a strip off the bottom.
  5. Decorate your crown with markers.
  6. Write the Message, "King for a Day".
  7. Glue on jewels at the pinnacles. You can use rhinestones, craft jewels, glitter, or cut colored cellophane into little diamond shapes.
  8. Check the size and tape the ends together to make the crown.

Variation;
To make a simpler crown, cut triangles along the length for a pointy crown.

Valentine's Day Heart Pin Craft

Here's a lovely Valentine's Day heart pin made from felt.

Materials:

  • hard red felt
  • heart template pattern
  • red sequins
  • small red beads
  • red thread and needle
  • safety pin
  • glue

Directions:

 1. Print out a heart template or use a cookie cutter. Cut out the pattern and trace on the felt. Add the first sequin on the tip of the heart.
2. Add a bead on top of the sequin.
3. Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread. Go through the hole of the bead and sequin. Pull the thread through to the knot, then tie off and cut the end on the back side of te heart.
4. Repeat this all around the outside edge of the heart with sequins and beads. Add one in the center if you like.
5. Glue a safty pin to the back of the heart.

Variations:
The original craft called for needle and thread, but I think you could make it easier by gluing on the sequins and beads.
Also, if your felt is not stiff, cut a matching piece of cardboard and glue the heart on that for strength.
