Koi Nobori Carp Streamers Windsock Craft

In Japan, May 5th marks "Kodomo no Hi", Boys' Day or Childrens' Day. The traditional decoration are large carp streamer windsocks. Carp swim upstream and are considered strong and lucky. Parents want their children to be like carp.

Here's a carp streamer windsock craft you can make from paper and hang up outside. Great craft if you're learning about other cultures or Japan.

Materials:

• construction paper
• scissors
• tissue paper
• crepe streamers
• hole punch
• string
• glue

Directions:

1. Beforehand, you need to cut a lot of fish scales. Cut shapes from various colored tissue paper like an oval with one flat side. Refer to the pictures on the website.
2. Apply a layer of glue along the long side of a sheet of construction paper.
3. Lay down a line of scales in rainbow colors.
4. Apply another layer of glue above the first row of scales and lay down the second layer.
5. Continue this process up the paper until you're more than halfway.
6. Cut a long strip from black construction paper and glue it over the last layer of scales.
7. Cut several lengths of crepe paper about 2 feet long.
8. Tun your paper over. Apply glue to the bottom side and put a row of streamers.
9. Trim of the scales from the sides of the paper. Roll up your paper into a tube. Glue or staple secure.
10. Cut 2 big black eyes and glue on opposite sides of the tube.
11. Punch 2 holes at the top of your tube and tie a string to hang up.
