Here is an excellent instructional video from sciencetoymaker.com on making a simple and inexpensive Cartesian diver experiment from a straw and some paper clips. The video is not only clear and step by step, but also explains the science behind it as well as trouble shooting and how to handle a big class project. This is a great science craft project or summer school activity. There are other variations. I saw where you can color and cut out a sea creature from a plastic file and tape to the straws. The key to the diver is that it needs to be weighted and just barely float. I also saw diver from a plastic pipette. Put a little plastic skirt on it and make a squidy diver. Cartesian Diver Toy Craft

I remember having a Cartesian diver toy when I was a kid. Now, you can make your own. This Cartesian diver craft comes from a Japanese site and has photos and instructions in English and Japanese. One advantage of living in Japan is when you buy sushi at a supermarket, it always includes a little soy sauce packet. These are often little plastic tubes shaped like fish. They have a resealable screw on cap and are perfect for making the little Cartesian divers. You can also buy them at the store. They need a little weight at the bottom like a nut and need enough air inside to just barely float to the surface. Put them in a sealed plastic bottle full of water. When you squeeze the bottle, they sink. You can also get fancy with some divers with little hooks and try to snag weights on the bottom like a game. Cradboard Box Air Cannon Craft

Here's a very simple cardboard box air cannon video tutorial. You can use it to shoot down light targets or fill it with smoke and blow smoke rings. Basically tape a cardboard box closed and cot a round hole in one end. Push on either side to make a gust of air out of the cannon. This makes a great science experiment about air pressure. The video shows using a fog machine to fill the cannon with smoke. You can skip that step. I would substitute using dry ice and water to make smoke or burn some incense. The video is in Japanese, but that doesn't matter. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Plastic Bottle Air Cannon with Smoke Craft

Here's another version of the plastic bottle air cannon craft from Japan. This one goes an extra step and adds incense sticks to make smoke so you can blow smoke rings with your bottle. Visit the site below for an excellet, and simple picture tutorial.

Materials:

• 500 ml, 17 oz. plastic drink bottle
• duct tape or carpet tape
• scissors
• an exacto knife or box cutter
• a balloon
• incense sticks

Directions:

1. Make a starter slit in the plastic bottle about an inch from the bottom.
2. Now use scissors to cut the bottom off the bottle. Be careful there are no jagged edges.
3. On the side o the bottle, cut or burn a slit opening about 1.5 inches long.
4. Cut the balloon about 1 to 2 inches from the opening.
5. Stretch the balloon to completely cover the bottom of the bottle. This is the diaphragm of the air cannon.
6. Use duct tape to secure the balloon to the bottle.
7. Use a strip of duct tape and attach a few short incense sticks as shown in the picture on the website.
8. Lite the incense stick and insert into the slit to fill the bottle with smoke.
9. Place your finger over the slit. Pull back on the end of the balloon and let go to fire the air cannon and make smoke rings.

Balloon Car Toy Craft

Here's a fun balloon car toy craft from a Japanese site. Follow the link below for more pictures on how to make this craft.

Materials:

• corrugated cardboard or plastic cardboard(Pradhan)
• scissors
• 6 plastic bottle caps
• small drill or other tool to poke or burn a hole into the bottle caps
• 2 bamboo skewers or thin dowels
• a balloon
• plastic tubing or thick straw
• tape
• rubber bands

Directions:

1. Cut a rectangle a few inches long from the plastic cardboard.
2. Drill or otherwise poke holes in the center of 4 plastic bottle caps for the wheels.
3. Tape a rigid strip of plastic or a craft stick to the underside of the cardboard for reinforcement.
4. Drill 4 small holes into another bottle cap and 4 matching holes in the cardboard. This is for the rubber bands to go through.(personally, I think this step is unnecessary. You could simply tape the tube to the cardboard.)
5. Put 2 bamboo skewers through the holes in the cardboard for the axles and attach the wheels.
6. Insert a piece of plastic tubing or straw into the balloon. Tape in place.
7. Use rubber bands to attach the balloon to the bottle cap and the cap to the car.
8. Blow up the balloon, set it down and watch the car go.
